How to Redact a PDF

Permanently remove sensitive text, images, and personal data from any PDF — in three steps, directly in your browser. No upload. No software to install. Free.

What is PDF redaction?

PDF redaction is the process of permanently removing sensitive information from a document before sharing it. This includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, financial account numbers, medical record numbers, social security numbers, and any other personally identifiable information (PII).

Redaction is required in many professional contexts: legal discovery, FOIA responses, medical record sharing, HR documents, financial reports, and any document subject to GDPR, HIPAA, or CCPA.

⚠ Drawing a black box is not enough

Simply placing a black rectangle over text in a PDF editor does not redact the underlying data. The original text remains in the file and can be copied, searched, and extracted. True redaction permanently deletes the data from the document structure.

How to redact a PDF — 3 steps

1

Open your PDF

Go to redactoffline.com and drag your PDF onto the upload zone, or click Start Redacting to browse your files. The document loads directly into your browser memory.

Supported formats: PDF, PNG, JPEG, WebP. Maximum file size: 50MB. Free plan supports documents up to 5 pages.

2

Mark the content to redact

You have two options:

  • Auto-detect PII — click the auto-detect button to automatically find and highlight names, emails, phone numbers, SSNs, IBANs, addresses, and more across 35+ patterns.
  • Manual redaction — draw a selection box directly over any text, signature, or image you want to remove, with pixel-perfect control.

You can combine both approaches: run auto-detect first, then add manual boxes for anything the algorithm missed.

3

Download the redacted PDF

Click Export. RedactOffline generates the final PDF in your browser and triggers a direct download to your device. The redacted regions are permanently removed from the PDF byte stream — they cannot be recovered.

Optionally, generate an audit report listing every redacted element, its type, and its position in the document (Premium feature).

When to redact a PDF — common use cases

Legal documents

Court filings, contracts, and discovery documents often require redaction of client names, financial details, and medical information before public submission.

Medical records

HIPAA requires that patient identifiers be removed from medical records before sharing for research, billing disputes, or public reporting.

HR and employment

Job applications, performance reviews, and salary records shared with third parties must have personal identifiers removed under GDPR and similar laws.

Financial documents

Bank statements, tax filings, and invoices shared with accountants, lawyers, or regulators require account numbers, SSNs, and personal data to be redacted.

Government and FOIA

Freedom of Information Act responses require redaction of third-party personal data and classified information before public release.

Research and journalism

Academic papers and investigative reports must protect source identities and participant data before publication.

Frequently asked questions

Is PDF redaction the same as highlighting in black?

No. Simply drawing a black rectangle over text is not true redaction — the underlying text data remains in the PDF and can be copy-pasted or extracted. True redaction permanently removes the data from the PDF byte stream. RedactOffline performs true, permanent redaction.

Can redacted text be recovered?

With RedactOffline, no. The tool removes the original content from the PDF data structure, not just visually covers it. The redacted text or image cannot be retrieved by any known method including copy-paste, metadata inspection, or forensic file analysis.

Do I need to install software to redact a PDF?

No. RedactOffline runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. There is nothing to install or download. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, and any device with a modern browser.

Is it safe to redact confidential documents online?

With RedactOffline, yes. Your files are never uploaded to any server. All processing happens locally in your browser. Even if your internet connection drops mid-session, redaction continues to work.

What types of sensitive data can be auto-detected?

RedactOffline automatically detects: full names, email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses, social security numbers (SSN), IBANs, dates of birth, passport numbers, national ID numbers, and license plates — using over 35 regex patterns covering multiple countries.

Does PDF redaction work on scanned documents?

Yes. RedactOffline includes a built-in OCR engine that reads text in image-based and scanned PDFs. Auto-detection works on digitized documents too.
